The Runaways – A music-fuelled story of the ground-breaking, all girl, teenage rock band of the 1970s, “The Runaways.” The film follows two friends, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now-legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. Joan and Cherie fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley, who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself—and so do its two leads: Joan is the band’s pure Rock-’n-Roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is the sex kitten.
Cast: Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, Michael Shannon
Director: Floria Sigismondi
The Runaways opened at NuMetro cinemas this past Friday (09 July 2010) (in South Africa) and carries and age restriction of 16DLS, but is so worth it. I went to see it this weekend and its real Rock ‘n Roll. Kristen & Dakota give such real performances and put behind any of those soft, clean images they have portrayed. I think this might be why Kristen chose this part – it is so very different and might rock some innocent Twi-Hard fans. Not to mentiont he brilliant performance of Michael Shannon, who plays the sleazy, flamboyant, Kim Fowler. Although some have found it to be ‘weird’, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Its a movie about the 70′s and what Rock n Roll looked & felt like.

Last night was the world-wide premiere of The Runaways in LA, California. Here are some photos from the red carpet of the beautiful Kristen Stewart & Dakota Fanning. Also in attendance was Joan Jett (who Kristen plays) and Cherie Currie (who Dakota plays) and showing his support for his fellow Eclipse co-stars is Taylor Lautner I love their dresses What do you think?
BellasDiary.com have these pictures of The Runaways cast so you can compare the movie’s cast members to the original band members including Joan Jett played by Kristen Stewart and Cherie Currie played by Dakota Fanning. The movie will be released on March 19th and on June 18th in South Africa
Here are two new posters for The Runaways, starring Kristen Stewart & Dakota Fanning. The movie still hasn’t been scheduled for release in South Africa yet, but we will definitely keep you updated
Kristen Stewart was at the Sundance Fesitval in Utah this weekend, promoting her two upcoming indie movies, Welcome To The Rileys and The Runaways. Welcome To The Rileys, is about a man (James Gandolfini) grieving over the death of his mistress becomes the platonic guardian of Stewart’s underaged prostitute. In The Runaways, Kristen stars opposite her New Moon co-star, Dakota Fanning. The Runaways tells the story of Joan Jett (Kristen), and Cherie Curry (Dakota), who co-founded the band, The Runaways.
Owen Gleiberman saw The Runaways this weekend and wrote the following on EW movie critic :
From the moment I arrived at Sundance, the movie that more or less everyone, including me, wanted to see most was The Runaways — and not just because it offered the chance to see whether Kristen Stewart, as Joan Jett, could leave her swoony Twilight mopiness behind her and play a rock & roll princess with down-and-dirty spunk. (Verdict: She can.) It’s also because the Runaways, a packaged group of choppy-haired teen-glam feline punkettes from L.A. who, in 1976, did for girls playing power chords what the Sex Pistols did for beer-spewing anarchy, may seem cooler now than they did then. In hindsight, they blazed quite a trail, but they didn’t have many good songs — and even their best one, “Cherry Bomb,” never quite broke free of their jailbait novelty-act image.
I really want to see this film, there is no South African release date yet for the Runaways (I am working on this) but the film centers around Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning) and Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) in their rock band The Runaways. Here is a new clip from the film and a couple of stills of the girls. I really expect great things from this film and am hoping it makes it’s way down to SA!
Kristen will be singing some, if not all the songs in the film which is really exciting and she sounds so much like Joan Jett it is scary, but a good kind of scary, not American Idol scary
