bingham 209x300 Happy Birthday Gil BirminghamGil Birmingham, was born on 13 July 1966, in San Antonio, Texas, where he spent his formative years moving from state to state, due to his father’s career in the military. As the eldest of five children, Gil grew up in many locations, including Alaska, Hawaii and Kentucky, eventually ending up in California where he now calls home. His musical aspirations began at age 10, when he first picked up a guitar and learned to play. Since then, he has traveled across the country, singing and playing guitar with various bands. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix served as the early inspiration for Gil’s musical style, which ranges from Blues and R&B, to Rock.

After graduating cum laude from the University of Southern California with a B.S. degree in Administration, he embarked on a career in petrochemical engineering. Gil began bodybuilding and soon entered a number of bodybuilding contests. His sculpted physique led to his first acting experience when he was cast opposite Diana Ross in her music video,Muscles. After his on camera debut, Gil’s acting became an extension of the creative expression of his music. While studying acting with Larry Moss and Charles Conrad, he played Conan the Barbarian at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Gil made his television debut in an episode of Riptide, and went on to star in television shows, including an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Gil appeared as a series regular in the medical drama Body & Soul, starring Peter Strauss. In 2002, he received a First American in the Arts (FAITA) award for an “Outstanding Performance in a Recurring Role” for his portrayal of a hospital intern in Body & Soul. TV viewers have seen him in guest appearances on Veronica Mars, where he played shady casino owner Leonard Lobo. More recently, Gil appeared in the comedy improvisation show 10 Items or Less, as John Greene, and in Nip Tuck as a tribal shaman.

On film, Gil starred with Dean Cain in Gentle Ben 1 and 2. His Native American Comanche ancestry has brought him numerous roles, such as the alcoholic, abusive father in Skins. A pivotal role for Gil came as Manny Deadmarsh in The Doe Boy, which won the Sundance International Filmmaker’s Award in 2001.

In 2005, Gil won the American Indian LA Film and Television Award for “Outstanding Supporting Role” in Dreamkeeper, a two-part miniseries, for his portrayal of Sam. In the role, Gil captured the feelings of a father who had made regrettable choices, yet who desperately sought to reconnect with his son. After the success of Dreamkeeper, Gil played Sharp Claw in the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie, Love’s Long Journey.

Cast by Stephen Spielberg in the six-part miniseries Into the West, Gil offered a gripping portrayal of the older Dogstar. One of his many fine performances, he adeptly portrayed Dogstar from adulthood through his elderly years. It is through his eyes, that viewers witness the atrocities and devastation that occurred at Wounded Knee in 1890.

After Into the West, Gil switched gears to play Moipa, a vengeful tribesman in End of the Spear. In addition to film roles, Gil’s voiceover work includes theWild Thornberrys, Night at the Museum, and a yet-to-be-released animated film, Turok, Son of Stone.

GilBirminghamTwilighthigherres 286x300 Happy Birthday Gil BirminghamLonging to battle vampires again after his taste in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gil joined the werewolf pack as Billy Black, chief of the Quileute tribe, in the blockbuster hit, Twilight, a film based on the best-selling series written by Stephenie Meyer. As Jacob Black’s father, Billy, confined to a wheelchair, is a descendant of a long line of magical chieftains. Gil found working with director Catherine Hardwick to be one of the best experiences in his career. Honored to be among a cast of talented young actors, such as Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner, Gil will return as Billy for the sequel, New Moon.

Gil recently filmed The Love Ranch, starring Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci, directed by Taylor Hackford. The movie is a true story about the married couple who founded the first legal brothel in Nevada in 1975. Gil plays the corrupt Sheriff Johnny Cortez, who is Joe Pesci’s right-hand man. In January of 2009, Gil finished shooting an animated film called Rango, staring Johnny Depp. The film is due out in theaters in 2011.

Currently, Gil is working on a number of new projects that span both stage and screen. In what little spare time he has, he continues to pursue his music, which is essential to his spirit. Gil enjoys embracing nature and the unbelievable beauty of mother earth, whether it be in the California mountains or in the incredible tropical setting of Hawaii. His work has allowed him to visit many parts of the world, where he enjoys exploring different cultures and sharing our connection as human beings to all things.

Attack of the Wolves: Chaske Spencer

We brought you Vanity Fair’s interviews with Alex Meraz and Kiowa Gordon, now we have the interview with Chaske Spencer, who plays Sam Uley in Twilight: New Moon.

How did you get the part of Wolf Pack leader, Sam Uley? Chaske Spencer VF

It was one of the weirdest auditions I’ve done. We put it on tape, and usually the process is: you meet the casting director, get a callback, then you meet the producer and director. This just went straight from tape. I auditioned for all of the parts of the Wolf Pack; they called me back and told me what part I had. Also, I didn’t really know who [the character] was because I didn’t know much about Twilight. Then I figured it out and said, “Wow, that’s a really good part.” It’s amazing. I’ve never gotten a part like that before.

Once you got the part, did you go back and read the books?

Yeah, I started with New Moon. Then I started dabbling in Eclipse because there’s a lot of back-story to my character. I really tried to relate to those characters, do my job … and then go to the gym.

How much time did you have between finding out you got the role and actually starting shooting?

Not much—about three weeks. They got us a trainer and really started throwing us into the work, into working out, which was with a gentleman who helped out on 300. I was pretty psyched about that; it was really tough. I was [already] in shape, but when he got his hands on me, it was a whole different beast altogether. I put on 25 pounds in those two months. It just happened—one day, I stepped out of the shower, took a look at myself, and I didn’t recognize my own body.

You all went through this together as a pack, too.

Yeah, that was the one thing that was really cool; it did bond us. We’re unknowns, and we couldn’t tell anyone for a month that we were cast. So we just talked to each other, made sure we kept each other in check, got competitive with one another. It was like [we were] brothers. I gained so many family members through this, which I’m really grateful for.

So you were this unknown actor living in New York who suddenly found himself on the set of this huge studio blockbuster. What was that like?

It’s so surreal, I mean, I’m feeling it right now! On the film sets of New Moon andEclipse, I feel safe. It’s like you’re in the center of the hurricane, but outside is where it starts to get chaotic. I would say that, in the last few days, I started noticing that I’m in this huge franchise. I’m going to be in one of the biggest movies of the year, and it’s a little surreal, frightening, and exciting all together. It’s like one big roller-coaster ride.

What are you doing to prepare for it?

No one can give you a book on how to deal with it. There’s not much you can do about it except for just having a good head on your shoulders. You have to go on your own and figure it out.

new moon wolf pack 300x253 Attack of the Wolves: Chaske SpencerLike many of the other wolves, you have your own Twitter page, too.

It’s really cool. It’s like being in this rock band. It’s nothing like I’ve ever done before on any film or play—you really interact with the fans. I Twitter for theTwilight fans. I can write where I’m going, what I’m doing—I try to keep it general so I don’t give too much away—and the fans are great! They’re really excited about it; some even know more about me than I do myself!

Speaking of rock bands, Kiowa [Gordon] said you got him listening to Phoenix and Grizzly Bear.

Kiowa and Tyson Houseman are really into music, and we talk about that. I’m really into discovering new music. I’m a drummer, and I live with a musician—he’s in a band called The 5 O’Clock Heroes. I’m not just plugging him because he’s my roommate; his band is really good. He introduces me to all of the cool new bands, and we’ve had musicians coming over to our apartment for a while now. I like this new cat, Liam Finn, who I heard about in Australia. I also just got theNew Moon soundtrack, and I’m really impressed! I think it’s amazing. I’ve been listening to it all day actually. I like Band of Skulls, and I’ve been a fan of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club for years now. This is going to be my album for the month.

Peter Facinelli, tweeted this morning : “My little 1 turned 3 today. Happy bday angel.I spent the day trying to see the forest through the trees. Still in the thick of the woods.” So we want to wish his little one (Fiona) a very happy birthday :)

Ashley Greene, tweeted on 25th : “Listening to old incubus…brilliant.
