LA Eclipse Premiere

After 11 Hours to London, 5 hours stop over and another 10 hours to LA, we finally landed at LAX and was picked up by our driver in a Escalade.  Immediately I felt like a star.  We had plenty to keep us busy till Thursday – the day of the Eclipse Premiere.  I could not sleep the night before and was bursting on Thursday.  We headed off to the spa and had our hair done, after which we got ready for the Eclipse World Premiere.  Unfortunately, we arrived late and after collecting our tickets and handing in our cameras and cell phones, we went straight into The Nokia Theatre.  We all received popcorn(which came in an Eclipse cup) & cooldrink.  We watched the end of the red carpet on screens in the cinema.

At about 20h30, the lights dimmed and in walked Robert Pattinson.  The audience went wild.  He was followed by Kristen Stewart & Taylor Lautner, each time the audience screamed.  And then, Eclipse was shown.  It was the most amazing experience to know I was watching this movie in the same theatre as the stars –all of them seated just in front of me.  The audience showed their appreciation of either the stars or the scenes with a quick clapping of hands or scream (when Taylor was shirtless of course), but they quickly quietened down each time, which allowed us all to enjoy the movie.  After the screening, we filed out and collected our cameras and cell phones, which took quite a while.  We then proceeded across the lot to the roof top garage, where a huge tent was erected and the after party was.  It wasn’t very crowded when we arrived and we sort of just wandered around.  In each corner of the tent, they had raised lounges, which were cordoned off.  This was where the stars were, but you could see them and take photos.  They had food and drinks available for everyone and great music playing.

As I was walking around, I saw Gil Birmingham just sitting on the side having a drink. Of course I approached him and asked if I could get his autograph and a photo with him.  He agreed and then I told him I was from South Africa and he told me he would love to visit one day… Lets hope so!  Next I walked past one of the lounges and saw Taylor Lautner in the on the other side.  While walking round, I spotted Nikki Reed and Elizabeth Reaser and quickly snapped pics of them.  As I approached the other side, I realised that Taylor’s body guards were getting ready for him to leave and I quickly snapped some pics of him.  While waiting for him to leave and possibly get a better shot, who should also be leaving – Stephenie Meyer :) Then Taylor’s body guard made a path for him and guess who they shoved him right past – yours truly!! Naturally I just put my hand out and softly brushed his jacket.  Unfortunately I couldn’t talk to any of them as they were leaving but I got pics at least.

So with them gone and realising that the party was ending soon, I walked round and saw Tinsel Korey & Tyson Houseman chatting.  Standing next to them was Daniel Cudmore and boy is he huge!  Daniel and his date were just leaving and I wanted to stop them and say hi, but I guess I just felt so intimidated by his size!  As I stepped back, I literally walked into Cameron Bright.  He apologised, I apologised and then he said you aren’t from here.  I said no but I’d love to get his autograph and he gave it to me.  I asked someone walking past to take a pic of us and told him I’m from South Africa.  This led us to having a long conversation about the World Cup and why the red card for Khune (South Africa) was so unfair and that they should start thinking of using technology like they do in rugby and cricket!  At this point I was very grateful that my dad had taught me about sport and I could actually have a conversation about it :) .

So thinking this is it, I slowly started heading towards the door, when Kiowa Gordon & his girlfriend rushed past me.  I turned back and standing among a group of fans was Xavier Samuel.  I patiently waited to get his autograph and photo of him, when this short man ran up to Xavier and literally jumped him.  While watching these two men fool about, I realised who this short man was – David Slade.  So when they stopped, I had a chance to either speak to Xavier or to David.  I decided I’d rather chat to David.  I was so nervous to approach him and the first thing I did was tell him I loved his movie and thought he really captured the mood of the book.  He thanked me and that I am huge fan.  He thanked me again.  I then told him I travelled all the way from South Africa to be here and that got his attention.  He asked me where in SA I was from, and told him Johannesburg.  He told me had been to Cape Town a few times but never to Johannesburg and would love to come see it.  I told him he really should and that although Cape Town is beautiful with its mountains, Joburg can offer a lot too!  I asked if he would give me his autograph and would you believe he actually personalised it for me!  WOW!! Then his wife walked up and said isn’t he wonderful and I agreed.  She asked if I would like to have my photo taken with him and I said I would love it!  After that, the other ladies I was with wanted to leave and so I had to head home, but all I can say is WOW!!

I am so glad I got the opportunity, thanks to 5fm, Ster Kinekor & MiMoney and am planning on going for Breaking Dawn World Premiere next year November! :)

Twilight Lexicon Reviews Eclipse

Here is an amazing review of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, written by Alphie of Twilight Lexicon, after the pre-screenig at Oprah’s show a couple of weeks ago. It does have spoilers, but not really anything big, especially if you have read the books! I hope it’s all true :)

eclipsebill Twilight Lexicon Reviews Eclipse

As most of you know, a special screening of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse was shown to Oprah’s audience members on Tuesday May 4, 2010.  I was able to attend the screening.  I don’t want to spoil too much, so I hope to make this review as spoiler free as possible. Now if you are trying to stay 100% spoiler free stop reading here, but if you want more, read on .

First off, I think it needs to be made clear that what we saw that night was an unfinished product.  I spoke with a representative from Summit after the film to confirm a few things before I passed any judgment on any particular section of the film.  I was told that the sound for the film we saw was mostly raw, meaning not a lot of over dubbing had been done to clean up the vocal quality of the dialogue,  and that the sound track wasn’t completely provided.  This was good news to me as I found some of the dialogue difficult to understand.  There was even one section where the sound disappeared completely and subtitles were supplied so that we would know what Edward was saying to Bella.  There were also long 10 – 15 minute segments of film, all non-action scenes, with absolutely no underscoring.  You don’t realize how much that underscore means to the emotion of a film until you watch a film without it!  And now that we’ve heard parts of the soundtrack, I am really excited to hear that music incorporated into the film.

Other than the sound, the special effects weren’t finished.  We were told at the start of the film to expect the finished product to be sharper and more visually dynamic.  I’m not sure which moments were missing their effects, but I’m guessing that some of the vampire battle moments will get tweaked as well as the wolves.  We did get a shot of a few wolves in their silvery, computer digitalized versions, which was a bit of a shock to see and really makes you understand the work that goes in to animating the wolves.  However, the moments with the finished wolves we’re just beautiful.  I felt that each wolf’s character really came through.  There is one moment in particular with Jacob in wolf form that is just perfection.

So that being said, what we DID see was 100% of the storyline.  Let me reassure those of you who still doubt the romance of the film that it is there.  It is so totally there!  Every kiss you expect to see is there.  Every moment of longing and confusion is there.  From marriage proposals to leg hitches, it’s all there… and then some.  The chemistry is hotter than ever.  No need to worry about this side of the film.

Those of you that have missed the Cullens in the first two movies will not be disappointed.  All the Cullens get more screen time, with the obvious emphasis on Rosalie and Jasper and their back stories.  It was really quite fantastic to see them playing their human counterparts, and then to see both of them as red eyed vampires.  The flashbacks were some of my favorite moments of the film.

Wolf pack fans, you get a treat, too.  The scene that comes from chapter 11 of Eclipse (Legends) is very well done.  Even though the CG on the wolves wasn’t finished, I felt there was more emotion and characterization in the wolves this time around than in New Moon.  The new additions to the pack are played exactly as you expect.  The crowd gave a sweet “awwww” when we first met Seth in the film.  Booboo Stewart is so spot on Seth that you can’ t help but smile at him.  Julia Jones is as bitter and edgy as Leah should be.

But I think the thing everyone will be talking about when they walk out of the theatre is the action.  Action, action, action!  Vampires being vampires and werewolves being werewolves.  The action in the film rocks!  It’s fast paced and intense.  Yes, there is blood and the vampires die on film exactly as described in the books.  Some of it will make you say “ewwww,” but then if you’ve read the book you know how certain characters go out in the end.

The few things that have had me concerned are the same things that have had every fan concerned from the moment we first saw the trailer.  Jackson’s and Kristen’s wigs are just… not good in the version that I saw! There was online speculation that some of the pick up shots that were done recently were to fix Kristen’s wig.  I had it confirmed from a Summit representative that Bella’s hair was actually digitally remastered so that she would have the natural looking hair we all know and love, and not an obvious wig with a dodgy hairline!  I’m not sure if they did the same for Jackson, but I hope they did something.  Jasper’s hair looks stringy. When in confederate uniform, Jasper’s costumes were fine; however, some of his more modern costumes reminded me of Mister Rogers in a few scenes.  I find it really sad because Jackson did such a good job with Jasper’s back story.  He really shines in this movie, but his hair and cardigan sweaters are somewhat of a distraction.

For the typical die-hard fan there are some changes made: a line choice here, a  moment missed there.  However, I don’t feel I can really address them here without spoiling too much.  It isn’t  much of an issue, just a few minor things that I wished had been done differently.  And keep in mind that I am personally attached to Eclipse, so I figured I’d be pickier about this film than any of the others. So as a fan of the books, I understand that when adapting book to film that some things have to go or be changed, but it wasn’t anything vital that made me think the heart of the plot was destroyed or that familiar characters were acting out-of-character.

Overall, I honestly feel this is the best of the three films, and I’m not saying that just because I’m a Twilight fan.  That comes with the addendum that I also feel it is the best book in the saga.  So take my opinion for what it is worth on that account.  However, with the intensity of the romance and the fast-paced action sequences, I  expect every Twilight fan will be thoroughly pleased with the end result.  More than pleased – I expect this film to crush some box office  records not because it’s a Twilight film, but because it’s a great summer movie!  Bravo David Slade.  And bravo to the cast and crew for truly bringing their A-game for this one.  I can’t wait to see the final product on June 30th!

Roundup of Eclipse Screening on Oprah

We told you a while ago about the competition Oprah held for Twilight fans to be on her show.  Well, this show was taped this week & the lucky people in the audience not only got to meet Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner & Dakota Fanning, but got to watch an early cut of the Eclipse movie.  Obviously it is not the one we will see in cinemas in June, as there have been re-shoots etc, but its close :)  The pre-recorded episode will air in the US on May 13th but no date yet for when it will show in South Africa.  We will let you know as soon as we have any info.  Here is what MTV reported on this:

cullens high 300x199 Roundup of Eclipse Screening on Oprah

In the midst of the confusion yesterday where we tried to figure out what exactly was going on with the ”The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” world premiere, some very, very, very lucky “Oprah” guests we invited quietly to a little premiere of their own. Oprah taped her “Eclipse” show — set to air next May 13 — today, and to prepare her guests to ask topical questions to Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner andDakota Fanning, she showed them an early cut of “Eclipse.”

Yes, you read that right. Some “Twilight” fans have already seen “Eclipse,” and they probably aren’t you. But Twi-hards aren’t the greedy type, and quickly took to Twitter to share their wealth of information with the world — one, in fact, exclaimed: “OH MY GOD!!!! Eclipse was absolutely AMAZING. Better then both New Moon & Twilight! Holyy crappp =O.” In between the “OME!!”s and drooling, we were able to pick out some pretty interesting information that of course we are going to share with you.

There had been some concern after the final “Eclipse” trailer premiered that this third installment in the “Twilight Saga” would sacrifice the love story for the action (apparently everyone forgot the first trailer, which showed us otherwise). The unanimous response was that the love story is definitelystill there, and it is very hot and heavy. This means, yes, the leg hitch, the tent scene and Bella and Jacob’s kiss all make the final cut, and, as one Twitter user claimed, were enough to “get her turned on.” And yes, the scene where Bella punches Jacob is also included, though we never doubted that it wouldn’t be in the film.

But that doesn’t mean that the action wasn’t great either. This was an early cut of the film so some of the animation was still a bit off, but everyone seemed to think that it was the best action of the series. The fact Jasper was featured quickly but clearly in the second trailer’s fight scene tipped us off to the fact that he and Alice were going to be pretty prominent in the action sequences, but apparently they get a lot more face time throughout the entire film, and actually get a chance to really interact with each other. Unfortunately, Jackson Rathbone‘s wig is supposed to be pretty bad, but Kristen’s is better since the first trailer.

Which brings us to some other exciting news: everyone loved Jasper and Rosalie’s flashbacks. We already knew that Jasper would be seen horse back in Civil War regalia, but apparently this was news to other people. As far as Rosalie’s flashback goes, we read that her entire conversation with Bella lasts about five minutes, but the actual flashback is only about two minutes. This is kind of a let-down, but if a picture is worth a thousand words we’re guessing David Slade was able to do a lot with those two minutes.

It’s been a bit of a trend that fans keep labeling the newest director in each “Twilight” film as being better than all the previous ones (sorry, Catherine Hardwicke). Unsurprisingly, there were many claims that David Slade did a great job with “Eclipse” and that he’s the best director yet, which is exactly what Chris Weitz predicted back when everyone was rallying around him after “New Moon.”This also is allegedly the funniest of all the “Twilight” films so far, so if David can top “Face Punch,” we’re going to be really impressed.

Are you counting down the days until “Eclipse” comes out? Does this calm your fears about how the film will turn out?
