Carlisle is the first and hence oldest member of his family, in Twilight he had just turned 362. He was lonely in his younger years, and after creating Edward, realised that he could offer people another chance at life when their human lives were nearly over.
Esme’s human life had been a hard one and she was very unhappy. She fell pregnant and her pregnancy was the only thing that had brought her joy. She had given birth to a baby boy who died just a few days after he was born and when he died she felt she had nothing left to live for. In her grief-stricken state she tried to commit suicide by jumping off a cliff. When her body was found she was taken straight to the morgue, assumed dead.
Carlisle had been working in the hospital where Esme was taken and because his senses are so advanced he could hear her weak, erratic heartbeat and realised she was still alive. He changed her to save her because he had known her in her human life. When Esme had undergone the transformation she fell in love with Carlisle and the two have been devoted to one another since.
Their relationship is strengthened by Carlisle’s enhanced compassion and Esme’s ability to Love completely. The two are a very Good match and make each other very happy. Edward was created before Esme but she still looks at him and loves him like a son.
