Thanks to one of our readers and Vanity Fair here is an interview with screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, who adapted Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series for the big screen. Rosenberg, who learned how to write “teen” on The O.C. and “sympathetic monster” on Dexter—which made her the perfect candidate for Twilight—spoke about her writing process for the hit series:
“I read the book in record time, in one sitting. And I came in and talked to the them, and it was just as easy as it could possibly have been. Embarrassingly easy. It was really like the universe just kind of stepped in and handed it to me. I hate to even say that because I know getting jobs in this town is just impossible and really grueling and pitching and pitching and pitching. I had certainly done my fair share of that. But this one was just one of those meant to be…”
Rosenberg explains how she made sure to stay true to the books, both out of a concern not to disappoint the enormous fanbase, and because Stephenie Meyer had written in her contract that any film adaptation had to stay faithful to the original story. Rosenberg had very little contact with Stephenie while screen writing for the first movie, she did consult with her more frequently on the upcoming sequel; New Moon, which Rosenberg wrote before the Twilight had even come out.
“For the second movie, I sought her out a great deal more, because she has a really intricate mythology that’s very very detailed. And not all of it is on the page, but she’s thought it all out. And I wanted to make sure not to violate that, but also to glean some ideas from her. The third one I gave her the outline, which I normally would never do.”
The biggest challenge about writing New Moon, she says, was that Edward, the porcelain-skinned protagonist played in the movie by official ‘handsomest’ man in the world Robert Pattinson, disappears for half the book. Rosenberg says, “I think we’ve come up with a solution that will satisfy fans that is very much like the book.”
