Midnight Sun: The Saga Continues…

Midnight sun is a companion novel to Twilight, re-telling the story but from Edwards’s point of view. It is the only book she is writing from his perspective but she has said that while Bellas story ended at Breaking Dawn there are others characters in the series. Hopefully this means that the series doesn’t end at Breaking Dawn (considering Midnight sun doesn’t tell us anything new.)

The last update Stephenie Meyer gave fans was in August 2008, she stated that a rough draft of the first 12 chapters had been leaked and she was so hurt by this betrayal and violation of her work that it ruined her state of mind. She is very clear that her writing is a creative process that requires her to be emotionally committed to the project and that now she would be unable to finish Midnight Sun the way it was meant to be written: “My first feeling was that there was no way to continue. Writing isn’t like math; in math, two plus two always equals four no matter what your mood is like. With writing, the way you feel changes everything. If I tried to write Midnight Sun now, in my current frame of mind, James would probably win and all the Cullens would die… I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun, and so it is on hold indefinitely”

stephenie meyerHer agent was bombarded with fans e-mailing and insisting the book be written and so Stephenie took up the project once more. There is however no official release date and she mentioned that she wanted to release the book when people have “forgotten about it” in two years or so. This is probably why most people assume the book will be released between now and the end of 2010. But if she really is waiting for people to forget it will certainly take longer than 2years.

Apparently she let Twilight director Catherine Hardwick read the finished chapters in order to gain some insight into Edwards feelings for the shooting of the film.

Her agent also mentioned that she was very busy last year with the movie release and writing her latest book; the host, and that when she was done she would have much more time to concentrate on the new novel. But with New Moon in shooting and all the publicity work she has at the moment it may delay the completion of midnight sun still further.

The chapters she has put on her website are the first 12. They correlate exactly to the twilight chapters except for 3new chapters: chapter4: Visions, Chapter 7: Melody and chapter 8: Ghost. Twilight goes up to chapter 24 which means there should be at least 27 chapters in total in the new the book, without including any other possible new chapters. So there is much left for Meyer to do in order to get the book done.

She will be releasing it though, she says on her site, with regard to, the 12 chapters you can read: “Please remember this is an unedited rough draft. It is full of typos and all the other flaws that unedited manuscripts have. Enjoy it for what it is, but know that the final copy will be infinitely superior

So she confirms the book will be published it’s the when that evades her. When she announces a day or there is something a bit more solid than the current rumours I will let you know, I do hope that the rumours are true and that she releases the book in the coming year.

All’s Fair In Love And War

I’m sure everybody has heard the saying: “All’s fair in love and war”, most of us accept it at face value, use the phrase colloquially but do we give it enough thought and is there any truth to it?

I have been giving more thought to Edwards actions in New Moon and how -unfair- it is to the both of them. We only see Bella’s suffering so we possibly neglect how miserable Edward must be while he is away from her. It doesn’t seem right that he leaves but I have gone into this in an earlier post, my interest here is a little  bit more relevant to Twilight…Bella and Edward

When Bella believes James is holding her mother captive in the Ballet studio in Phoenix she writes a short note to Edward and runs head first into trouble. Effectively, she leaves Edward -fine to save her mothers life and give hers- but she leaves him. The feelings and emotions that course through him in his desperate attempt to reach her before anything disastrous happens must be along the lines of the hopelessness Bella feels in New Moon.

Is it  somewhat fair that he leaves her? Almost like karma. His intentions are different but they are similar to hers in that they both leave for the ‘greater good’. They are both selfless to the point that all it does is hurt the people they love. Edward tells us in New Moon that he had contemplated suicide in case he had been too late to save Bella.

Clearly the two belong together but the misery they bring one another is insurmountable and makes me wonder whether or not their lives may have been better if the two had never met. Bella would have had to just settle for being normal (while this thought is not ideal, it does seem to apply to most of us and we get through the day ;) ) and Edward would have carried on living without realising how much he needs her. Their lives would have been average and they would never know great love, but is the happiness they bring one another worth the pain?

Why is it that after all she suffers she is ready to risk her life on the off-chance she could save his? Without a moments hesitation she would give everything and everyone up for him. For the man who showed her love, and so brutally took it from her.

It doesn’t make sense. But then in love… does it ever?

So is it fair then, what they put one another through or can you only appreciate what you have once you’ve lost it. Do they love each other more knowing how empty their lives are when they are apart? and is it fair to hurt people in the name of love?

I know it is just a story and perhaps I take it much too literally but there is something to be learnt in this situation -How much pain will you let the one you love inflict before you step back and evaluate whether it is all worth it? Is your relationship ‘fair’ or do you lose more than you gain, and finally where do you draw the line before you walk away.

Bella becomes an empty shell of a person when Edward leaves, I understand he became her world but it is not okay to lose yourself to that degree over somebody. Lost love is a terrible thing but to lose one’s self is the greatest loss.

Where it all began…

Stephenie Meyer literally dreamed up the story of Twilight one night, but to take it from conception to birth is an intricate and timely process.

Many things changed when Meyer finally found a publishing house that was prepared to take on the Twilight series. Parts of the book were deleted, ideas  grew and the story became more solid. One of the things that underwent a huge transformation were the book covers.

Initially Meyer wanted to call Twilight -Forks. How is it that just a name can steal so much from a book? I have to be honest, if the first installment of the Twilight series was Forks, I may not have read it -I am so shamefully shallow :(

But thank goodness (for me at least) the book was renamed and so Twilight came to be. Here are some of Meyer’s initial book covers, mostly created just for fun and to test the waters.

These covers were all designed for Twilight; the first one was done with its original name of Forks:

These were her designs for the second Book in the Twilight series: New Moon

And finally,(because there are no cover designs for Breaking Dawn) Meyer’s designs for Eclipse: The man on the first cover is suppposed to be Edward and the second cover is Meyer’s ideal Jacob.

Meyer posted all the covers on her website, check it out for the narrations that go with the pictures and a bit of insight into why she designed these the way she did. I prefer the published covers, as does she I’m sure. :)

Twilight Soundtrack

Ok, so  I just bought the CD!!! Yay and I have to tell you, I am NOT disappointed, can’t even complain about 1 song (and note: I am a born complainer ;) if there is a problem, I’ll find it and moan until I eventually wear myself out. -This is not something I am proud to share but it seems necessary at the moment).

There are 12 songs in total:

1. Muse- Supermassive Black Hole

2. Paramore- Decode

3. The Black Ghosts- Full moon

4. Linkin Park- Leave Out All The Rest

5. Mutemath- Spotlight

6. Perry Farrell- Go all the way

7. Collective Soul- Tremble For My Beloved

8. Paramore- I Caught Myself

9. Blue Foundation- Eyes On Fire

10. Rob Pattinson- Never Think

11. Iron & Wine- Flightless Bird, American Mouth

12. Carter Burwell- Bella’s Lullaby

Some of the songs are classics, Muse naturally (Thanks to Meyer no doubt… ;) ) but even some of the songs I’d never heard of are fantastic! I’m not sure if it’s because it is so easy to recognise where they fit into the movie and now have some emotional connotation but I love every song. Most of them are a little ‘dark’ but it just portrays the intensity of the feelings in the film.

They were all well thought out when they were selected to be in the film. If you listen to Eyes on fire (which I love!) do it more than once. It is an awesome song but like wine, it is an aquired taste, the first time you hear the whole song it will sound a bit bare (trust me) but after two or three times it grows on you like moss. :) And Never think was written and sung by Pattinson. Two of his songs were in the movie as far as I know but only one made it into the cd. He has a strange voice (this is supposed to be a positive) and it is difficult to make out the words but it is almost hypnotic (I am trying to be objective here ;) )

All in all, it is a great cd. It is only my opinion and not everyone may agree but if you are unsure, listen to them on Youtube and decide for yourself. I would definately go out and buy it again -and it’s not often you can say that. Usually you hear a great song and build yourself up to buy it, pop it in to play (skipping through the ones you haven’t heard…well maybe thats just me) and so often there are two good songs and the rest are unpleasant at best.

As far as I am concerned it is a great buy and everyone [the girls at least] should own a copy for those rainy day moments…

Robert Pattinson on New Moon

Robert PattinsonRobert Pattinson thoroughly enjoyed reading Stephanie Meyer’s New Moon, so much so that he hopes his part in the upcoming film is small. He feels strongly that the film should stay as true as possible to the book.

Pattinson revealed that he likes the thought of having an ominous presence in the beginning and a “spectacular comeback at the end. I liked that about it [the book]. It would be terrible if you keep like sticking little bits of me in – it kind of deletes it. I  Like coming back with a big comeback, killing yourself in Italy that’s like so cool. I mean it needs to have like lust and stuff and the ominous presence. That’s what I liked about the character, that’s what makes it, the second book so good.”

But that is exactly what director Chris Weitz intends on doing, when Bella hears Edwards voice in her head, we will see a flashback of him or he will appear to her. I think this is to keep interest up among Pattinsons fans -the “hate Jacob” girls ;)

I agree with Pattinson though, There is a reason Edward is missing in action in the story and he is in the beginning and end of the book, it’s only the middle of the story where we don’t see him. It is the way the book is set.

That being said, I am glad we will see bits of him; his appearances in Bella’s head are literally a few seconds long and shouldn’t detract from the longing and loneliness that Bella feels, if anything it could make her feelings clearer and more intense for the audience.

Rob says New Moon was his “favourite book out of the series” because he finds it to be like reading somebody’s diary. That’s why he believes the twilight series is so successful because you are living it through Bella’s eyes. He feels that:  “In many ways it’s quite simple and in a lot of ways it’s so obsessive like only she could write them.”

“I thought it (New Moon) was really sad. I like it as well that they are so long; it takes the characters so long to come to terms with things.”

We love the books too, and it certainly does set a high precedent for the film…

Kristin Stewart -Adventureland

.Bella (Kristen Stewart).

Being released this weekend in the USA is Kristin Stewart’s new movie Adventureland. The movie was inspired by Greg Mottola’s (the writer and director) own ‘bad’ work experiences. Starring Jesse Eisenberg as a recent college graduate who has to get a degrading minimum-wage summer job after his original plans to tour Europe were cancelled for financial reasons.

The movie is set in 1978 and is a remake. Eisenberg who plays James Brennan meets kristen Stewarts character (Em) in adventureland where she works, and naturally, all of a sudden his summer doesn’t look so hopeless…

It looks like a sweet feel-good film.

Stewart made her acting debut in 2001. She has been in quite a few films, The panic room with Jodie foster in 2002 , She played the daughter of Dennis Quaid and Sharon stone in Cold Creek Manor in 2003, In 2004 she played the lead in Catch That Kid. She also acted in the Messengers(2007) in the same year she was in the land of women.

She has co-starred with many household names such as Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, Jodie Foster, Diane Lane and Adrian Brody among others. She seems to be quite a talented actress getting some positive reviews on her performances.

Special features DVD

Twilight DVD

So now that the DVD is out obviously most of us will want the 2-disc edition with the special features. Apparently the only place that will have stock of it is wantitall.co.za. They say that they are running a special on the pre-order of the twilight DVD (Special edition),  and that they are the only site in SA to be importing it.

They have it priced at R299 and deliver within 7-15 working days. Please note: it is a zone 1 DVD and most SA DVD players are zone 2, so if you don’t have a DVD player that will play zone1 you may have to reconsider. The reason for this is that they get it from amazon.com (as opposed to amazon.co.uk which is compatible with the South African market)

Alternately, I HAVE found the 2-disc version of Twilight on Kalahari which is a zone 2 and priced at R129. It will only be in stock in April, but I think it is a much better buy.

I am not 100% sure both products are the same just wanted to inform you of the options available, I’m sure there are many other places you could find it if you looked, was just hoping to save you some time making it convenient :)
